Cleaning scuba diving gear
Because of its excessive exposure to water, a lot of bacteria and fungi can grow on your scuba diving mask after you have used it. So it is very important that you clean and disinfect your scuba diving gear as thoroughly as possible before storing it away. Plus, you do not need to invest a lot of time in it. if you know precisely what to do, you job would be done in 10-15 minutes.
Not cleaning of the grime properly can cause great damage to you or to anybody else using that piece of equipment to go scuba diving. Therefore, it is advised that your equipment be cleansed each and every time you have used it. This can be done by getting hold of a specially prepared solution available at scuba diving gear stores, or by using any non-ionic detergent solution. Maintenance is very simple.
Follow the steps mentioned below to decontaminate your scuba diving gear:
- Get hold of a non-ionic prepared solution and lots of fresh water.
- Always start with the regulators of the scuba diving gear, moving on to other parts of the equipment.
- Spray the detergent solution on all parts till the surface is fully covered with the solution.
- Leave the solution there for about 10 minutes before moving to the next step.
- If you find the solution drying up before 10 minutes are over, spray the surfaces of the equipment again with the detergent solution.
- You need the solution to be soaking your gear for 10 minutes for effective decontamination to take place.
- After this stipulated period of time all you need to do is rinse the equipment thoroughly with fresh water and leave it out to dry.
- In case you happen to be using the BIBS mask, you will first need to detach it from the rest of the equipment. After this you may follow the same procedure as for other kinds of equipment, that is, coat the mask and the straps with the detergent solution and soak for 10 minutes before rinsing.
- For the chamber oxygen hood you need to take special care. Spread a generous layer of the non-ionic detergent solution over the neck and the hood and soak it for 10 minutes. In case it begins to dry up, add some more of the solution. After the stipulated period of time, rinse the hood chamber in a sink full of clean water, or under running water, which ever is convenient.
- After rinsing it is important to air the scuba diving gear before placing them in any enclosed space. It is important that the gear does not remain damn while you are storing it away.
- Finally we come to the cleaning of the recompression chamber in the scuba diving equipment. Though it may look like hard work, cleaning this piece is not all that complicated. Use the procedure mentioned above for soaking of the gear for about 10 minutes. After that use a lint free cloth that has been soaked and wrung with the detergent solution and wipe the gear, after which you can rinse it thoroughly. This is very effective in making sure that all the oil and grime get ousted as thoroughly as possible.
